Embark on a culinary journey through Southern Japan’s Kyushu and Okinawa, featuring dishes such as Saga Beef Saikoro Steak, Kumamoto Karashi Renkon, Nagasaki Castella, Kagoshima Kibinago Sashimi, Fukuoka Mizutaki, Oita Kabosu Tonic Cocktail, Okinawa Goya Champuru, and Miyazaki Mehikari Karaage, and many more, presented in Malaysia for the very first time.
Kyushu and Okinawa mark the beginning of the 47in27 journey, unveiling a southern side of Japan shaped by volcanic landscapes, coastal abundance, island traditions and deeply rooted culinary heritage.
Across Kyushu’s seven prefectures, every destination reveals its own distinct identity through flavour and culture. From Fukuoka, the birthplace of rich Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen, to Saga and Kumamoto, celebrated for their prized wagyu and bold, full-bodied flavours, the region presents a remarkable diversity shaped by both land and tradition.
In Nagasaki, a historic port city long connected to the world through international trade, foreign influences have given rise to a uniquely layered food culture. Oita is known for its comforting regional dishes and famed hot spring towns including Beppu and Yufuin, while Miyazaki offers vibrant produce and charcoal-grilled specialties deeply connected to its agricultural heritage. Further south, Kagoshima is recognised for its deep umami-rich cuisine shaped by fertile volcanic terrain and generations of craftsmanship.
Extending beyond Kyushu lies Okinawa, Japan’s subtropical island paradise where a distinct Ryukyu heritage continues to shape everyday life. Surrounded by turquoise waters and a slower rhythm of living, Okinawa is celebrated for comforting Okinawan soba, rafute braised pork belly and vibrant tropical fruits including pineapple, mango and papaya. The region is also home to treasured cultural landmarks such as Shurijo Castle, the iconic Churaumi Aquarium and the lively streets of Kokusai Street in Naha.
Beyond its cuisine, Okinawa is renowned for traditional Ryukyu textiles, handcrafted Shisa guardians and a culture deeply rooted in longevity and wellness. Known as the birthplace of karate and home to one of the world’s highest centenarian populations, Okinawa reflects a way of life shaped by balance, community and heritage.
From the dramatic landscapes of Mount Aso to the island warmth of Okinawa, this opening chapter invites guests to discover Japan through regions that are rich in flavour, craftsmanship and cultural identity.
